Pine County Water Plan

Pine County Water Plan

The Pine County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution on March 4th, 2008 requiring the update and revision of the Pine County Local Water Management Plan, as authorized under Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 103B.301, the Comprehensive Local Water Management Act.

On August 17, 2010, the Pine County Board of Commissioners voted to adopt the new Pine County Local Water Management Plan.  Many representatives from area lake associations were present to show their support of the new plan and the SWCD.  In 2020, the plan was updated.

One Watershed, One Plan
In 2015 the Minnesota Board of Soil and Water Resources (BWSR) and the Minnesota legislature outlined plan content requirements for comprehensive watershed management plans and began to encourage the transition from Local Water Plans to comprehensive watershed management plans (One Watershed, One Plan). The One Watershed, One Plan approach strives for a systematic, watershed-wide, science based approach to watershed management. The plan uses the state’s delineated major watersheds, of which 5 lie partially in Pine County.

The One Watershed, One Plan involves not only Pine SWCD staff, but staff from all areas included in each watershed. It envisions an approach that unifies the interests of stakeholders beyond that of any one group and can prioritize multi-benefit projects that maximally benefit the watershed.

Many of the watersheds within Pine County have begun developing One Watershed, One Plans and statewide plans are expected to be fully implemented by 2025.
